Mazda RX-7 VeilSide Fortune (Han’s Rework). Part of AW Assetto Corsa mods collection.
The VeilSide Fortune Mazda RX-7 is one of the most recognizable cars in cinematic history, synonymous with the underground drift culture of Tokyo. While multiple versions of this car exist for Assetto Corsa, most suffer from a common “lazy” development trait: they use generic, highly unstable drift physics or standard RX-7 lines stretched over a wider visual track. Driving an iconic widebody machine that handles like a mismatched franken-mod completely ruins the immersion. This update is a comprehensive physics and material rework designed to bring the balance, high-RPM rotary power, and aggressive steering kinematics of this legendary build to life with high fidelity.
🏎️ The VeilSide RX-7 Physics Philosophy
The goal was clear: stop this car from feeling like a standard, lightweight street car with an inflated grip envelope, and transform it into a highly tuneable, wide-track drift machine. Existing versions featured completely inaccurate weight distribution, generic tire compounds that snapped unpredictably, and linear power curves that failed to replicate a heavily boosted rotary engine.
🛠️ Key Technical Changes in This Update
1. Powertrain & Turbo Logic
The heart of Han’s RX-7 is the twin-rotor 13B, overhauled here to simulate a high-performance single-turbo conversion with realistic volumetric efficiency.
- Dual-Profile Output: At the default 60% wastegate setting, the car produces a movie-accurate 300 bhp, reflecting the real-world performance of the original film cars. Cranking the turbo slider to 100% delivers a full 500 bhp.
- Torque Curve: Discarded the linear power delivery of the old mod. The new curve delivers true high-RPM rotary behavior, demanding precise throttle modulation to maintain rear wheel-speed mid-drift.
- Acoustics: Tweaked the internal and external turbo audio profiles, integrating a distinct, high-pressure blow-off valve (BOV) release script.
2. Suspension Geometry & Steering Angle
To handle high-angle entries without the front wheels binding or clipping through the chassis, the entire steering and front-end suspension configuration has been rewritten.
- Drift Steering Lock: The physics now utilize a fast, drift-specific rack geometry that maximizes front-wheel articulation without crashing the engine’s over-center logic.
- Kinematic Realism: Completely reworked
suspensions.ini. Adjusted the mechanical trail, scrub radius, and caster angles to ensure the steering wheel auto-corrects with realistic, aggressive self-alignment torque during weight transitions.
3. Weight Distribution, Aero, & Tires
- Mass Reduction: Reduced overall curb mass across the chassis to accurately simulate a stripped interior paired with lightweight carbon-composite VeilSide Fortune body panels. This significantly reduces pendulum inertia when shifting weight.
- Aero Performance: Rebalanced the aerodynamic maps. The oversized Fortune rear wing and widebody channels now generate stable downforce values at high speeds without adding artificial, performance-killing drag.
- Tire Compound: Implemented a brand-new tire compound featuring a progressive lateral slip curve. This removes the snappy grip characteristics of standard street tires, opening a wider thermal threshold for predictable side-bite.
4. Visuals & CSP Shaders Upgrade
To bring the visual model up to modern Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) standards, the interior and exterior material definitions have been rebuilt via ext_config.
- Authentic FnF Han’s RX7: Added a brand-new skin featuring the proper House of Kolor Sunset Pearl Orange (Code: PBC31) and high-gloss black two-tone scheme. The shader replicates the real-world paint’s depth, flipping from a rich red-orange in the shadows to a golden-amber under direct light.
- Light Refractions: Corrected missing glass refraction properties on the custom front and rear light clusters, allowing indicators and brake lights to disperse light realistically.
- PBR Materials: Implemented a full CSP material pass across the interior cockpit and exterior bodywork, mapping realistic surface reflections onto the carbon weave, plastics, and metallic heat shielding.
🏁 Why This Rework Matters
In assetto modding, visual accuracy is only half the battle. A car can look perfect, but if the engine physics and suspension lines are copied from a completely different chassis class, the driving experience is hollow. By discarding the lazy base physics and engineering a dedicated high-angle rotary setup from scratch, this rework transforms an iconic show car into a sharp, highly communicative drift tool built for precision layout driving.
Installation Requirements
- Base Model: orig by DanielDi Is required and needs to be installed first.
- Method: Extract the contents into the content car’s folder, overwriting the
data, extension, anduifolders. - Requirement: Latest version of Custom Shaders Patch (CSP) is highly recommended for the lighting and tire shader fixes.
