Saab 96: The “2-Stroke Screamer” Rework

The early Saab 96 was powered by a longitudinally mounted 841cc inline-3 two-stroke. Because a 2-stroke fires twice as often as a 4-stroke, it punches well above its weight class. This overhaul focuses on that unique power delivery and the specialized driving techniques required by its freewheel system.

The 841cc Triple: 2-Stroke Soul

We have completely rebuilt the engine physics to reflect the high-revving nature of the Saab triple:

  • SAE-Spec Power: Reworked to produce exactly 38 bhp @ 4,250 rpm (standard 1960s spec) and 81 Nm (60 lb-ft) of torque. The torque curve is narrow and peaks high, requiring you to keep the engine “on the pipe” to maintain momentum.
  • Sound Comfort: The audio has been normalized to a “non-ear-bleeding” level, removing the harsh digital peaks while retaining the iconic “pop-pop-pop” idle and high-pitched rasp that earned it the “angry tea kettle” nickname.
  • The Freewheel Logic: The drivetrain now simulates the freewheel device. In a 2-stroke, lifting off the throttle cuts lubrication to the engine; the freewheel allows the car to coast while the engine idles, preventing engine seizure.
  • 4-Speed Manual: Corrected the gear ratios for the 4-speed gearbox, ensuring a realistic 0–60 mph time of ~24 seconds and a top speed of 127 km/h (79 mph).

Aero & Handling: The Aerodynamic Teardrop

Saab used their aircraft heritage to achieve a 0.32 $C_d$, which was revolutionary for the time.

  • Aero Rebalance: We have adjusted the drag coefficients to match Saab’s real-world wind-tunnel data. The car now cuts through the air much more efficiently than other 60s cars, allowing it to maintain high cruising speeds despite its low horsepower.
  • Front-Wheel Drive Dynamics: The weight bias has been set to 58% front, reflecting the heavy-nose layout that gave Saab its legendary traction in snow and gravel.
  • Suspension Geometry: Reworked the double wishbone front and U-beam rear axle. The car now exhibits the distinct Saab “lifting” behavior under power and stays incredibly stable on loose surfaces.

Visual & Technical Polish

  • Extension Enhancements: Added custom CSP tweaks to refine the material shaders for the chrome trim and the unique V-shaped dashboard.
  • Tire Tweaks: Updated to represent the thin 155 R15 bias-ply tires. They are narrow for snow-cutting but provide a communicative, low-grip experience on tarmac.
  • AI Improvements: The AI has been retrained to handle the low-torque engine. They no longer stall on inclines and will attempt to carry as much momentum as possible through corners.

Installation Requirements

Note: This physics and graphics configuration is designed for compatibility with the Blaze model.

  • Required: A valid installation of the base model by Blaze is required to apply these technical updates.
  • Included: The 7z archive contains updated dataextensionsfx, and ui folders.
  • Method: Replace the folders in your content/cars/saab_96 directory.
