Porsche 356 A 1600 Speedster: The “Pure Momentum” Rework

The 356 A Speedster was built for one thing: the joy of the open road. This overhaul recalibrates the 1600cc flat-four and the swing-axle rear suspension to ensure the car feels alive, lightweight, and delightfully “sketchy” at the limit.

The 1600cc Air-Cooled Flat-Four

We have remapped the 1.6L boxer engine to match its legendary 1950s output:

  • Engine & Torque Rework: Calibrated to an authentic 60 hp (SAE Net standard). The torque curve is now faithfully modeled to provide peak grunt in the mid-range, rewarding smooth shifting and maintained momentum through corners.
  • 4-Speed Manual Drivetrain: Reworked the transmission with correct period ratios. The first gear is short for getting off the line, while fourth gear is tuned to allow a realistic top speed of approximately 160 km/h (100 mph).
  • Drivetrain Inertia: Adjusted the flywheel and engine inertia parameters. The engine now revs and drops RPMs with the distinct “lightweight” feel of an air-cooled boxer.

Dynamics: The Swing-Axle Experience

The 356 is famous (or infamous) for its rear-engine, swing-axle layout.

  • Suspension Geometry: Reworked the trailing arm front and swing-axle rear. We have simulated the “jacking” effect of the rear axles, meaning the car will lean significantly and the rear end will “tuck” under heavy cornering loads.
  • Weight Distribution: Corrected the mass to approximately 760 kg with a heavy rear-bias. This makes the car incredibly agile on turn-in but requires “slow-in, fast-out” discipline to prevent the rear from overtaking the front.
  • Tire Tweaks: Updated to represent thin 5.60-15 cross-ply tires. These offer low lateral grip but high communication, allowing you to drift the car at very low speeds.
  • Aero Rebalance: Adjusted the $C_d$ to match the Speedster’s aerodynamic (yet low-windshield) profile, ensuring acceleration tapers off realistically as you approach 130 km/h.

Visual & Technical Polish

  • Extension Graphics: * Chrome: Recalibrated the PBR values for the bumpers, “beehive” taillight surrounds, and hubcaps for a deeper, more realistic luster.
    • Paint & Materials: Tweaked the paint shaders to look less “plastic” and more like single-stage 1950s lacquer. The leather and “German square weave” carpet textures in the interior have been refined.
  • General Bugfixes: Corrected the fuel tank position to improve weight transfer logic and fixed a collider issue that caused the car to scrape on perfectly flat tarmac.

Installation Requirements

Note: This physics and graphics configuration is designed for compatibility with the GeroDa74 model.

  • Required: A valid installation of the base model by GeroDa74 is required to apply these technical updates.
  • Included: The 7z archive contains updated dataextension, and ui folders.
  • Method: Replace the folders in your content/cars/porsche_356_speedster directory.
