Fastback 289 HiPo (Physics & CSP Rework)

The 1965 Ford Mustang is the definitive American pony car, but in the world of Assetto Corsa, it is often a victim of “copy-paste” engineering. Most existing Mustang mods use generic longitudinal RWD physics that fail to capture the car’s notorious front-heavy bias and the primitive nature of its rear suspension.

This update is a total “Data-First” overhaul. We have stripped away the generic handling traits of the original mod and replaced them with a bespoke physics set built on CSP Cosmic Suspension logic. The goal was to move away from a stable, modern-feeling coupe and back to a 1960s street machine that demands respect and precise weight management.

🛠 The “Pony Car” Physics Philosophy

The 1965 Mustang wasn’t a precision instrument; it was a lightweight body wrapped around a potent V8 and a utilitarian chassis. Our rework focuses on the 289 High Performance (K-Code) variant. We’ve eliminated the “on-rails” feel of the original mod, replacing it with realistic mechanical flex, significant body roll, and the distinctive “hop” of a live rear axle.

📦 Key Technical Changes in This Update

1. 289 HiPo Engine & Drivetrain

The “K-Code” 289 was a high-revving outlier in an era of low-end torque.

  • SAE Net Power Correction: Standard sim engines often over-calculate vintage “Gross” horsepower. We have adjusted the power curves to SAE Net values, reflecting the actual output seen at the flywheel with accessories. The result is a peaky, rewarding power delivery that thrives between 4,000 and 6,000 RPM.
  • 4-Speed Toploader: The gearbox ratios are now 1:1 with the factory wide-ratio Toploader. We’ve implemented realistic shift latencies—you cannot “teleport” gears in a 1965 synchro-box without consequences.

2. Cosmic Suspension & Solid Axle Geometry

The most significant leap in this update is the implementation of CSP Cosmic (Extended Physics).

  • Live Axle Simulation: Using CSP’s extended suspension headers, we have accurately modeled the solid rear axle. Unlike standard independent rear suspension (IRS) mods, this car now suffers from “axle tramp” and side-to-side roll-center migration.
  • Steering Kinematics: We adjusted the scrub radius and steering rack travel to simulate the heavy, unassisted feel of a vintage performance rack. The car now “hunts” over uneven pavement, requiring constant micro-corrections.

3. Mass Distribution & 3D Collider

A Mustang is notoriously “nose-heavy,” and the original mod ignored this.

  • Realistic Polar Moment: We moved the center of gravity (CoG) to reflect the iron-block V8 sitting over the front wheels. This creates the classic Mustang paradox: heavy understeer on entry, followed by snappy oversteer if you are too aggressive with the throttle.
  • 3D Collider Rebuild: The physics mesh has been aligned perfectly with the visual 3D model. No more bottoming out on flat tarmac or catching “ghost curbs” due to an oversized invisible floor-box.

4. Period-Correct Tires & Braking

  • Bias-Ply Feel: The tire slip angles have been widened. These tires don’t “snap” lose; they moan and slide progressively. Managing this “gray area” of grip is the key to a fast lap.
  • Brake Fade: We’ve simulated the thermal limits of 1960s friction materials. Aggressive braking will lead to heat soak, resulting in longer stopping distances and a “wooden” pedal feel.

✨ CSP Visuals & Refinement

  • Refractive Lighting: All glass elements, including the iconic triple-bar taillights, have been updated with refraction parameters for a deep, realistic “jeweled” look.
  • Extension Config: Full integration of ext_config.ini for PBR materials, self-shading cockpits, and adjusted spark emitters for underbody scrapes.

Why This Rework Matters

Most players want a car that is “easy” to drive. This update is for the players who want to understand why the Mustang was both loved and feared. By correcting the weight distribution and the primitive suspension, we’ve turned this into a momentum car. You don’t just drive this Mustang; you manage its weight.
