Ferrari 641/2: The “Aesthetic Apex” Rework
The 641/2 was the car that brought Ferrari within striking distance of the 1990 World Championship. This overhaul recalibrates the Tipo 036 V12 and introduces modern technical features like primitive traction control—a nod to the early electronics Ferrari began experimenting with during this era.
The Tipo 036/037 V12: 13,000 RPM Symphony
The heart of the 641/2 was its high-revving 3.5L V12, which traded low-end torque for a soaring top-end:
- Engine & Torque Rework: Calibrated to an authentic 680–685 bhp @ 13,000 rpm. The torque curve has been adjusted to be significantly “thinner” at low RPMs, requiring the driver to keep the engine above 9,000 RPM to stay in the power band.
- Primitive Traction Control: Added a “period-accurate” simple TC. Unlike modern systems, this provides a rough ignition cut to help manage the V12’s sudden power delivery, making the car more driveable for long races while still requiring careful throttle modulation.
- 7-Speed Semi-Automatic: The drivetrain has been reworked to simulate the Barnard-designed paddle shift system. Shift timings are now slightly mechanical and “clunky,” reflecting the pioneering (and sometimes fragile) nature of the 1990-spec gearbox.
Chassis & Aerodynamics: Precision over Muscle
The 641/2 was praised by Prost for being the best-handling car on the grid, outclassing the McLaren MP4/5B in the corners.
- Suspension & Sparks: We have lowered the ride height and adjusted the torsion bar spring rates to match Steve Nichols’ “smooth style” setup. The car now stays incredibly flat, and we have implemented a specific floor collider that produces impressive titanium sparks when bottoming out at high speeds or over bumps.
- Aero Balance: Re-calibrated the drag and downforce to favor high-speed cornering stability. The front-end bite is now more pronounced, allowing for the surgical precision needed in sections like the Peraltada or Maggotts/Becketts.
- Tire Performance: Updated to represent 1990-spec Goodyear qualifying and race compounds. The “cliff” is now more realistic, requiring tire management over a full stint.
Visual & AI Improvements
- AI Calibration: The AI has been retrained to handle the narrow power band. They will now shift more aggressively and defend their lines in a manner consistent with the Prost-Senna rivalry era.
- Graphics Extension: Custom
ext_config.initweaks have been added to improve the carbon fiber weave detail and the high-gloss Rosso Corsa paint. The dashboard display is now brighter and more legible under high sun. - General Bugfixes: Corrected the fuel tank capacity (220L) and fixed minor suspension travel issues that caused the car to occasionally “flip” on high curbs.
